One for the bucket list!
Wow is all I can say! My Mum (66 years old) and I did the sunrise hike up Batur. It is certainly not an easy trek up - lots of crawling, slipping, climbing and rests in between! I think that if it was light and we could see the "path", we may have not made it mentally! Once we got to the top and were above the clouds and the sun started to show - Wow! It was SO So worth the climb! Absolutely spectacular and breath taking. It was quite misty but not so cold, but I believe some mornings can be quite chilly, so pack a warm top. Our guide held my Mums hand the entire trek - up and down - she was a super star - such respect for her to do this every day! We felt a bit rushed to go back down once we had our egg and bread and the sun had risen, but we took our time and waited for the cloud cover to clear so that we could see into the crater. The guide also showed us some spots that others missed - she took us to a spot where the steam was rising out a crevice and took time to show us various other spots before we started our descent. The descent is also a bit grueling as your legs are like jelly from the climb up and navigating the rocky, slippery path down can't be rushed. My Mum was by far the oldest person on that trek that day and our guide was an absolute star and so patient! Mum was given a round of applause when she reached the bottom! It was certainly one of the most incredible experiences I have had and will remember it forever! It is not an easy trek, but certainly do-able and certainly worth it!
just recommended this service for see sunrise at Batur volcano, great service. All goes well. Highly recommended.
Beautiful crater and view of the lake

The hike up the crater is not too long and could actually be done without a guide. All the tours gather early in the morning to walk up before sunrise and it gets quite crowded on the way up, so there is no way of getting lost. The provided services are not really worth the money for the tour (breakfast is meagre and the guide not really needed), but what absolutely makes up for the fact is the stunning site itself. The crater is quite a sight to behold and the sunrise coming your way via Lombok is beautiful. There is steam holes and monkeys on the top and the hike down the backside is quite rewarding too, since one gets to see the lava fields from eruptions in the 1960s (if I remember correctly).
Recommenden Batut Sunrise
Mt Batur Sunrise Trek was an amazing, once-in-a-life-time experience for my partner and I. Our guide made sure both of us made it to the top, with regular breaks (I am very unfit haha).
Our driver (Kadek) was also welcoming and friendly. He made sure our trek to Mt Batur was safe and went smoothly.
I recommend this hike for anyone interesting in trekking around Bali.
beautyfull sunrise at mount Batur
Climbing Mt. Batur was a highlight of my trip in Bali!
Here's a detailed rundown for those curious:
I stayed in Canggu and was picked up around 1:30-1:45am... the car reached 1000m mark of Mt. Batur around 3:30am. We started the hike for the remaining 700m around 4-4:10am and arrived at the top right before sunrise around 5:50am.
Midway through the hike up we were given the option of going on the more crowded dirt path with motorcycles, or the quieter, slightly steeper scree path. My group chose the latter and I felt it was manageable and worth the climb to have less people around, but choose according to your fitness/comfort level. Coming back down we used the dirt path as it was less slippery and steep.
Our guide, Made, was very knowledgeable and friendly, and also always made sure we were alright / if we were unsure where to step she would help point it out / asked if we needed breaks. Any questions we asked about the area, culture, history etc., she was able to address! Kudos to her.
I carried too much water after reading some of the other reviews on here. Honestly I think 2x500ml bottles each person is more than enough, you'll get a drink when you reach the top anyway. Wear layers so you can keep adjusting your own comfort; the hike starts cold, gets warm, then becomes cold again. Sport shoes with good grip are sufficient. The team provided flashlights, make sure you get one from them. & keep your fingers crossed for good weather, we were so very lucky to see sun in a cloudy and rainy week (: Have fun!
